Versatile, Durable, And Timeless: Oliver Charles Is Slow Fashion At Its Finest

Introducing the 1st blog in my 3-part blog series exploring how Oliver Charles sweaters perfectly represent the different elements of slow fashion.

This blog is about testing my Oliver Charles All Season Boat Neck sweater for 7 days to see if it can handle the ever-changing shoulder season conditions of Wyoming.

----------

Wearing the same sweater for seven days straight might sound like a recipe for disaster, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned from my experience with Oliver Charles, it’s that their sweaters are built differently.

This is my second 7 Day Challenge with the brand. So, unlike the first time, I wasn’t skeptical about whether their sweaters could handle daily wear. I already knew they could.

Last spring and summer, I put their All-Season Marled Crew sweater to the test on my tiny Wyoming homestead, where it faced everything from unpredictable mountain weather to daily chores that would put any garment’s durability to the test.

For my last challenge, however, I was looking for a durable sweater that could withstand the particularly tough challenges and conditions of spring and early summer on my tiny Wyoming homestead.

This time around, I was hoping to find a winter/early spring staple that was warm yet breathable, and still elegant and stylish enough to wear for more fashionable occasions.

As my challenge quickly proved, the All-Season Boat Neck Sweater delivered on all fronts.

Unboxing My New Sweater And My First Impressions - Oliver Charles

Unboxing And First Impressions

By now, I know what to expect from Oliver Charles—high-quality craftsmanship, thoughtful design, and materials that feel as good as they perform. So when I unboxed the All-Season Boat Neck Sweater, I wasn’t surprised that it met my expectations right out of the gate.

The first thing I noticed was how much thinner and less bulky it was compared to the All-Season Marled Crew sweater I tested previously.

The fabric blend, 75% merino wool and 25% khullu (the ultra-soft down wool of high-elevation Tibetan yaks), felt incredibly soft, like cashmere but with a bit more structure. And honestly, I prefer that. While cashmere’s buttery softness is good, it’s also prone to pilling, whereas this sweater promised to be just as luxurious but far more durable.

And, of course, I have to mention the tote bag. Oliver Charles includes one with each sweater, and I was excited to add another to my collection. The first one I received has been my go-to grocery bag for ages—sturdy, spacious, and way more stylish than your average reusable tote. Having a second one? Definitely not mad about it.

Day 1: A Cozy Start

My first day in the All Season Boat Neck sweater was all about comfort. I wanted to ease into the challenge with a slow, cozy day, and this sweater was the perfect companion.

I spent the morning working from home, sipping tea while the winter chill pressed against the windows of my poorly insulated tiny house, lacking central heating.

From the first wear, I could tell how well the natural wool regulated temperature—it kept me warm but never overheated, unlike synthetic fibers that always seem to trap heat in the worst way.

As the day went on, I barely thought about what I was wearing, which is exactly what I want from a daily staple.

The sweater felt soft against my skin, never itchy or restrictive, and the relaxed fit made it easy to move around in.

By evening, I curled up with a book, wrapped in a blanket, and realized this sweater wasn’t just functional—it was cozy enough to become my new go-to loungewear piece.

Braving A Cold Day Running Errands Wearing My OC Sweater - Oliver Charles

Day 2: Braving A Cold Day Running Errands

Wyoming winters are no joke. Just ask my thermometer, which read a whopping -14 degrees Fahrenheit on this particular morning. The kind of cold that makes your breath freeze midair and turns every outdoor task into a battle of willpower.

As much as I wanted to hibernate, the real world wasn’t waiting for warmer weather—I had chores to do, a near-empty fridge to restock, and a pile of packages from my small business that needed to make it to the post office.

Bundling up was non-negotiable. I layered this sweater under my favorite down vest and an outer jacket, which together provided just the right amount of insulation. While admittedly I was really only outside for as long as it took me to dash from the safety of my car’s heated leather seats and into whatever building I had business in, my layers made the brief stints in the cold completely bearable.

Dressing Up With My OC Sweater - Oliver Charles

Day 3: Dressing Up (Wyoming Style)

Living in a small Wyoming town and working from home, I rarely have a reason to dress up. So when a community event rolled around—one where I’d be representing the local community garden board—I was excited to put together a more polished outfit. The only problem? It was still way too cold to wear something like a dress, so I needed to strike a balance between looking professional and staying warm.

Luckily, my Undyed All-Season Boat Neck Sweater made that easy. I love the elegant neckline and tailored-yet-relaxed fit—it has a subtle sophistication that makes it feel dressier than your average sweater.

It also has just the right length and weight to wear both untucked for a more casual look or tucked into high-waisted pants for a bit of extra polish, which is exactly how I styled it that day.

Paired with structured trousers, heel leather boots, and a long coat, I felt put-together but still comfortable—no fussy layers, no shivering for the sake of style.

Throughout the event, I stayed perfectly comfortable and didn't overheat. The breathable yak wool kept me feeling fresh even in a packed room.

If this sweater could transition so effortlessly from chores in subzero temps to a more refined setting, I knew I was onto a wardrobe staple that could truly do it all.

Testing Durability And Temperature Regulation with Cross-Country Skiing - Oliver Charles

Day 4: Testing Durability And Temperature Regulation with Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country skiing is my favorite winter activity—I try to get out at least once a week when conditions allow. But I’ll admit, I was a little skeptical about skiing in a wool sweater.

Would it be too warm? Would it feel damp and uncomfortable after hours of exertion in the snow?

Turns out, my doubts were completely unfounded. The yak wool fibers worked like magic, wicking away moisture, perfectly regulating my temperature.

I never felt too hot, even during the most intense stretches of duck walking uphill, and despite hours of movement, the sweater still felt dry and fresh—no damp stickiness, no lingering odors. I found out that this sweater can do it all. It's perfect for cold days and for when the season turns warmer.

Day 5: Another Low-Key Day, But Still Looking Put-Together

After yesterday’s high-energy skiing adventure, I was ready for a slower, more relaxed day. I kept things simple with a classic leggings-and-sweater combo, the kind of effortless outfit that feels comfortable yet still put-together.

Despite being on its fifth consecutive day of wear, the sweater still looked fresh. It held its shape beautifully—no sagging, no stretching out. The fabric remained smooth, with zero signs of pilling, which is something I can’t say for most sweaters I’ve tried after just a few wears.

Day 6: No Wash, No Problem—Still Fresh And Odor-Free

By day six, I expected some kind of sign that this sweater had been worn nearly a full week straight—whether that be lingering odors, stiffness, or just a general feeling of needing a refresh. But nope. Thanks to the natural antimicrobial properties of yak wool, it still smelled completely neutral, even after an active day out in the snow earlier in the week.

All I had to do was air it out overnight, and by morning, it was ready to go again. No washing necessary.

It made me think about how much unnecessary laundering we do with other garments, especially synthetics that trap odor and bacteria and shed astronomical amounts of microplastics with each wash, like fleece, of which a single garment can release thousands of microplastic each time it’s laundered!

Plus, overwashing and drying break down fabric faster, especially when heat is involved. One study found that drying garments just 20 times reduces the tensile strength of the fabric by about 50%.

Plus, we all know that sweaters are especially finicky about washing, and often come out stretched or shrunken.

So, a sweater that stays fresh enough that I hardly need to wash it? That’s a win in my book (because who likes doing laundry, anyway?).

Reflecting On My Adventures With My Yak Wool Sweater - Oliver Charles

Day 7: Reflecting on the Challenge—Could I Keep Going?

Seven days. One sweater. Countless activities. And somehow, it still wasn’t begging for a wash.

By the end of the week, I wasn’t just convinced—I was fully converted.

This sweater handled everything I threw at it: work, leisure, adventure, and even formal settings. It moved seamlessly between different aspects of my life without ever feeling out of place.

More than that, it reinforced something I’ve been coming to terms with for a while now—we don’t need overflowing closets full of fast fashion.

Instead, we need a few well-made, versatile pieces that last. And honestly? I could have kept going beyond the seven days. Maybe next time, I will.

Overall, Oliver Charles Did It Again!

After a full week of wearing my Undyed All-Season Boat Neck Sweater, I was surprised by how liberated I felt.

Having a reliable, go-to piece made getting dressed effortless and satisfying—no overthinking, no clutter, just a sweater that worked for everything.

This challenge reinforced that this sweater isn’t just another item in my closet; it’s a long-term investment.

With proper care, it will replace multiple fast fashion purchases, reducing both waste and my environmental footprint.

I’d recommend an Oliver Charles sweater to anyone looking for a high-quality, sustainable wardrobe staple, especially those who appreciate timeless style, durability, and ethical fashion.

Ultimately, this experience proved what I already believed: slow, functional fashion that prioritizes performance and versatility over flash-in-the-pan trends is the future, and Oliver Charles is leading the way.

If one sweater can replace ten pieces of clothes, imagine what a wardrobe full of carefully chosen, high-quality pieces could do, not just for the planet, but for simplifying our daily lives.
