The Different Types Of Capsule Wardrobes

  • 333 Capsule: The 333 method is one suggestion for how to curate your wardrobe, advising that you select only three tops, three bottoms, and three pairs of shoes to make up your capsule collection.

The goal is to achieve more with less, and to think outside of the box to create different outfit variations with only nine items at your disposal.
  • 5-4-3-2-1 Capsule: While the 5-4-3-2-1 rule consists of different variations based on personal preferences, the underlying principle is to choose 15 items of clothing to build your capsule wardrobe.

This could consist of choosing five shirts, four bottoms, three dresses or suits, two pairs of shoes, and one jacket, for example. The allocation of items for this method is not meant to be a rigid framework, but rather a flexible guide that can be adapted to fit your unique style and needs.
  • 10x10 Capsule: The goal of the 10x10 capsule wardrobe is to challenge yourself to choose only 10 items of clothing to wear for 10 days, or to fashion into 10 different outfits.

Once again, this method is designed to help you see the beauty of living with less and to push you to get more creative with what you already have in your closet.

Benefits Of A Capsule Wardrobe

There are a wide array of benefits that come with the implementation of a capsule collection, including perks such as relief from decision fatigue and choice overload, the opportunity to save money, an increase in creativity and inspiration, the possibility of feeling happier with less, and of course, the act of making a positive impact upon the Earth.

Capsule wardrobes are a wonderful tool to help you simplify your daily routine, as well as find joy in wearing clothing that feels personalized and truly reflective of your identity.

  • Reduce Decision Fatigue: Capsules take the guess-work out of choosing what to wear every morning, reducing outfit-related anxiety and improving your overall mental health.
  • Eliminate Clutter: Designed to be tidy and organized, capsule collections minimize mess and don't require constant decluttering.
  • Encourage Sustainability: Capsule wardrobes promote sustainability by encouraging mindful clothing choices. Each piece is chosen for long-term use, reducing the urge to follow fleeting trends and breaking the fast fashion cycle that harms the planet.
  • Promote Creativity: Owning a limited number of clothing items challenges you to get creative with your outfit choices, encouraging you to experiment with accessories, layering, textures, and silhouettes so you can feel confident and secure in your personal style.
  • Save Money: While capsules require investment upfront, they make up for this inconvenience by helping you save money in the long run. Adopting a capsule wardrobe requires investing in clothes that might be more expensive, but are high in quality and durable enough to last for years, even decades. Furthermore, a simplified closet discourages making excessive or unnecessary purchases and buying into trends, meaning that you will naturally become more frugal with where you put your money over time.
  • Simplify Travel Packing: Curating a capsule collection means having a suit-case ready closet that's easily packed to accompany you on any adventure.

What Doesn’t Count Towards A Capsule Wardrobe?

What does or doesn’t count towards a capsule wardrobe truly depends on the person and how flexible/strict one wishes to be with their collection.

It is important to allow for adaptability with certain non-negotiables, like socks and underwear, which are typically left out of most capsule counts. While some desire to pare down the number of accessories they own, it might be wise when first starting a capsule wardrobe to keep items such as jewelry out of the count so you have plenty of freedom to experiment with dressing outfits up and down.

Another important factor to consider is your lifestyle. For example, if you are the type of person who exercises every day, then you may not want to include your workout clothes as part of your capsule collection.

The 90-90 Rule For Decluttering Your Closet

The 90-90 rule, coined by The Minimalists Podcast, is a simple yet effective means of decluttering your closet.

To follow this rule, all you have to do is decide upon a period of 90 days, or 3 months, where you will dedicate yourself to keeping track of all of the garments that you wear during that time frame.

This can be done rather simply by turning all of your clothing hangers towards one direction, and then making sure that you turn each hanger around once you wear the item that it holds.

After the 90 days are up, it’s time to go through each piece of clothing you haven’t worn during the 3 month period and ask yourself honestly if you can see yourself wearing it sometime within the next 90 days. If the answer is yes, keep it. If not, then put it aside for donation.

What Is The Rule Of 5 Capsule Wardrobe?

The Rule of 5 is another means of auditing your closet, and it dictates that you can only keep items in your wardrobe that can be paired with at least five other things you already own.

Following this rule ensures that each piece in your capsule collection is truly versatile, and allows you to identify and donate non-essential garments that you may not realize require more effort to style or wear.

How to Pick a Capsule Wardrobe Color Palette

Choosing a color palette is an essential aspect of curating a capsule collection. If you are having difficulty coming up with a palette that you feel is authentic or suitable for you, try turning to your surroundings for inspiration.

Color combinations gleaned from nature will always look more natural, so go where your eye takes you and try to identify earth tones that you feel drawn to.

There are also plenty of resources on the internet that take the guesswork out of color theory, including applications like Adobe Color where you can isolate a color palette from a photo.

So round up your favorite pictures of the planet and experiment with them until you find a combination that you feel is expressive yet cohesive enough for your capsule.

The Psychology Behind Capsule Wardrobes

A simplified wardrobe can reduce stress and increase productivity. A primary reason why capsule wardrobes have risen in popularity is due to their association with improved mental health.

Capsule collections have become known to help ease the stress that comes with agonizing over choosing an outfit every morning, a common experience that many can relate to.

Capsule wardrobes are also believed to increase productivity through the means of enclothed cognition, which is the science that you do your best when you look and feel your best.

In this way, wearing your favorite, most comfortable garments every day actually has the ability to train your mind to improve your performance so you can unlock your highest potential.

Impact Of Choice Overload On Mental Health

Having choices in our lives comes with numerous advantages, such as higher performance, increased motivation, and overall greater life satisfaction. However, when one has too many options, it is easy to become overwhelmed with choice overload.

Studies show that when one is faced with too many difficult decisions that exceed their mind’s natural cognitive resources, the possibility of choice becomes more a source of dissatisfaction and unhappiness rather than improved well-being.

What Is Decision Fatigue?

In the same vein of choice overload is decision fatigue, which is a state of mental overload that impedes one’s ability to effectively make decisions. Decision fatigue is consequential, and yet it often goes unnoticed. It is estimated that the average adult makes between 33,000 to 35,000 total decisions every day.

Being decisive requires brainpower, and it has been found that most people’s decision-making abilities deteriorate throughout the day as they are required to make more and more choices.

Being confronted with too many decisions, even arbitrary ones, can be mentally exhausting and lead to the possibility of feeling stuck in a state of mental and emotional fatigue.
