Given that the week I chose to do the challenge wasn't exactly "cool," I was afraid the summer sweater would still make me sweaty. I was delighted to find that even though I did get a bit warm when the temp hit 80, overall, the sweater kept me a perfect temperature. The weave under the armpits looks a little different - almost vented. I think that increased the breathability. I wore the sweater without an undershirt and it was not itchy. When I saw that it had a sewn-in tag, I was afraid it was going to bother me. (This is supposed to be a sensory friendly sweater, after all.) But it really didn't. I had intended on carefully removing it when I had the time, but I ended up leaving it in. I was able to wear the sweater without washing it for the entire week. One of the things I look for in clothing is the ability to re-wear. I was surprised at how fresh it stayed, despite the warmer weather. The sweater also looked really sharp. I had compliments on my appearance. As someone who goes for comfort over fashion, it was really nice to wear something that rivaled as sweatshirt in comfort, while looking nice enough to go to church or to a business casual event. That provides a lot of value, in my opinion. I would recommend this sweater to anyone who loves comfort over fashion, but doesn't want to look dressed down all the time. I would also recommend it to anyone who appreciates being able to wear an item of clothing multiple times without having to wash it and who cares about owning quality, slow-fashion items over trendy fast-fashion.

One of the most important factors that affects the way wool feels is the fiber fineness. Thinner diameter fiber is softer. While a human hair has a average diameter of 75 microns (µm), the merino and yak wool (AKA "khullu") we use in our sweaters is ultra-fine at 17.5µm.
Wools that are generally considered "soft" have a fineness <20µm. Although, at the end of the day, you know best, so try new materials at different levels of fineness and decide what you like wearing most. If you find a wool sweater you love but find slightly itchy, note that fine wools, like merino and khullu, get softer with washing.
Wicking is an important benefit of wool, because in order to regulate body temperature, humans can sweat several liters a day. All this sweat can get pretty smelly right? In fact, sweat only becomes odor if it isn't wicked away. Wool has a number of unique moisture management properties that allow it to resist body odor making it ideal for #repeat wear and simplifying your life.
1) Saturation regain: wool can absorb and retain up to 35% of its own weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch, which reduces sweat buildup and discourages bacterial growth.
2) Isolation of bacteria: after sweat is absorbed from the skin's surface it travels outwards where it evaporates. In the process, wool actively binds and isolates bacteria within it's fiber. The isolation of bacteria reduces odor to the point where unwashed wool has 66% less odor intensity than plastic-based fibers and 28% less than cotton fabrics (Woolmark).
Fun fact: bacteria thrive in humid environments, where sweat is trapped instead of being wicked away. For example, while a 1x1cm area on a human forearm contains around 100 bacteria, an identical square in the armpit contains on average 10 million bacteria (Popular Science).
We make our sweaters from yak down, which is the hair they shed naturally in the spring, all the herders do to collect it is simply brush the animals. Merino sheep on the other hand are unable to shed their coat so it is sheared.
Our sweaters are made in Brooklyn, New York by Tailored Industry. We work with them to create our sweaters through a new manufacturing process called WHOLEGARMENT® 3D-knitting.
We chose Tailored Industry vs. other WHOLEGARMENT® manufacturers in part because of their brand vision. They want to become a platform for on-demand knitwear. We're hoping we can grow together, create all kinds of custom sizes, and eventually remove the need for inventory completely.
Pilling is the natural process that occurs when the shorter natural wool fibers work their way to the surface of a sweater.
Pilling is normal and expected with any wool piece of clothing, but fear not because there is a tried and true method to manage pilling.
The first thing you should do is wash your sweater after the first 4 wears. Throw your sweater in the wash with a pair of jeans, just make sure to close the zippers.
Over time, shorter fibers causing pilling will pull away on their own.
Yes! Simply machine wash your sweater with the rest of your clothes. Lay it flat to dry.

I would recommend this sweater to anyone who is looking to decrease the total number of sweaters packed for cool/cold weather travel and can be worn to the office or with jeans on the weekend.

I prefer not to wash clothes after every wear, but get frustrated when things lose their shape so quickly. I was hopeful this sweater would not only be versatile in its classic styling, but that I could actually put it through the (figurative) wringer and have it still look nice at the end of it. I was pleased to feel like the sweater looked just as nice/trim on Day 7 as it did on Day 1. The warmth without bulk can't be overstated. Sometimes I had a capeline tank top underneath, sometimes I was just wearing it next to skin - both ways, the insulation factor was great. The fit of the sweater is also really nice. As mentioned, I got the XS (I normally wear smalls in women's gendered clothing). It was trim but not tight, and the sleeve length was awesome, and it kept its shape throughout the week of wear. This week the sweater took me from playing outside to birthday parties to dinner out with my husband to the office and all around the house... and I never once felt like it wasn't up to the task. It is so nice to know I've got a comfortable, versatile piece that will make the 'what to wear' question that much easier to answer. It was also nice to realize/confirm how few people notice or care that you're wearing the same thing every day. Simple sustainability for the win! This is a great option for middle temps, and a great base layer for the cold. I'd recommend this sweater to just about anyone who lives in a climate where a sweater is ever something you put on - which sounds vague/silly, but it truly is a great, classic piece.
