My goal for reviewing the yak sweater was to determine whether or not it would be useful as hunting gear. The warmth to weight ratio is phenomenal and one thing that surprised me was its ability to cut wind, which seems superior to standard wool. I’ve been pleased with its performance overall! I enjoyed trying the Oliver Charles All-Season Quarter Zip out during the 5 Adventure Challenge. I got to wear the sweater in 3 different cities and climates. I feel like it lived up to its name of All-Season because I wore it on a colder fall day in Ohio and also on a warmer day in Tamarindo, Costa Rica. I was worried that the sweater would be too itchy because I have very sensitive skin, but I was able to wear it on my bare arms without a problem. I’ve worn the sweater for about 7 days and haven’t felt the need to wash it yet—I’ve simply hung it up after wearing. I think it is a great sustainable addition to my wardrobe and I highly recommend this style.

I was skeptical of wearing a sweater for 30 days straight without washing it. I was concerned it would lose his shape and that it was starting to look shabby. Quite the contrary. I really wore the sweater day in and day out for 30 days and all different situations did not wash it once it kept its shape. The sleeves were long enough and it still doesn’t stink. I would recommend the sweater to anyone who needs a sweater that can transition from casual to business to travel . It goes well with pants. It goes well with dresses and skirts. I can layer it under other sweaters or jackets or whatever. I can open the zip for more ventilation. I can close the zip if I want more of a turtleneck type feel. It is not scratchy. I love it. I travel quite a bit and it allowed me to drastically reduce my luggage amount as I could wear it on the plane and with various outfits, both dressy and casual. Pros: does not attract odors, whether it be dog odors, body odors, cooking smells. No odors. It does not attract pet hair or sewing threads. It pills minimally and then you wash it in the machine with a pair of jeans (with the zipper zipped) and all the pills come off. Doesn’t show stains. I did the seven day challenge for the quarter-zip and was very happy with it. The sweaters are unisex. I would normally wear a L in unisex sizes but I like my sweaters to be a bit over sized so I got the XL. The sweater is quite long especially with a short torso, but I could fold it under and was fine. It is thin enough to not create a lot of extra bulk. It has been good in a wide range of temperatures. It even remained fairly comfortable in the 80s. After seven days the sweater has kept its shape and still smells great. I think I could go a lot longer without washing if I wanted to. I have a trip to Japan soon and am trying to pack light. This will be the only sweater I need to bring.

I had been considering replacing my 20+ year old faithful fleece quarter zip and making a move toward more natural, sustainable fibers in my wardrobe. I also pride myself on minding natural resources (like using less water, doing less laundry) and also on packing light when I travel. When I came across the Oliver Charles website, it seemed as if their apparel could be the type of clothing I was looking for. However, I was a little reluctant to buy given the pricepoint and wondering if all the descriptions were too good to be true. The lifetime warrantee and that OC stands behind their products with a guarantee led me to make the purchase and give the zip a try. As I had a 2 1/2 week multi-country trip planned, that seemed like the perfect time and context to take the OC zip for a few adventures to see how it performed relative to my long-time fleece.
I was so impressed with the OC customer service. Before ordering the sweater, I had several questions about sizing and the timing of printing/delivery and the OC team was always very nice and very quick to respond. They were even able to provide my sweater more quickly than I had expected so I had it in plenty of time for my trip. The fit, feel and finish of the quarter zip is so much nicer than I had imagined it would be. While I was worried that the sizing might be snug (particularly around the chest), the cut is roomy yet fitted, giving a dressy appearance. The fabric is thick enough to hold its shape, but much softer to the touch than other wools. I appreciate the lack of seams more than I even realized I would.
The quarter-zip sweater is versatile across climates. It never seems too light or too heavy. It feels great layered over a t-shirt, over a long sleeve button down, or even just on its own. And, when not needed, it easily stuffs into a backpack only to come out again looking great. I was so impressed with how fresh-smelling the zip remained. I have a very strong sense of smell and thought for sure that I would smell a "wooliness" or a remnant of body scent after an afternoon hike. Expect for the time I spilled lagostino garlic butter on myself, there was not ever any foul odor coming from the sweater -- and even that one odor rinsed out easily and the sweater air dried to be used the following day. In all honestly, in terms of how fresh-smelling it keeps you, there were times on this trip when I wish some of the people around me were wearing one of these sweaters, too. It would have made for much more pleasant subway/bus rides (LOL).
This navy quarter-zip has so greatly out performed relative to my long-time polyester fleece zip that I now can't imagine how I my wardrobe was complete without it. It has definitely become my new goto not only for travel when I want to pack versatilely or light, but also just in everyday areas with great A/C. I would recommend this all-season quarter zip to anyone who wants a comfortable, quality piece of clothing appropriate for casual and semi-dressy occasions; those looking to add more sustainable clothing to their wardrobe; those looking to pack light; and those looking for a zip that will look and smell great through multiple wearings. This zip has quickly become a favorite for me and I am confident it will for others as well!

Weather in SoCal is tricky because it can be quite hot and then cool off very quickly. The 1/4 zip did the job of balancing the two extremes. And, because I live a rather active lifestyle, the form fit allowed me to move easily and effectively. Sometimes a sweater can hang on you, creating inertia as you change directions, but not the 1/4 zip- it stays right with you. When I was out in the front yard singing on Thursday it did a great job of keeping me cozy as the temperature dropped. I usually get chilly and need reinforcements but not this time. It will be a go-to sweater for not only the front yard jam but also for the cool mornings on the tennis court and the bike rides to the beach. I like my clothing to be low profile and the quarter zip really fits the bill. And the fact that cleaning the sweater is so easy is a big plus. Thank you OC!!

One of the most important factors that affects the way wool feels is the fiber fineness. Thinner diameter fiber is softer. While a human hair has a average diameter of 75 microns (µm), the yak wool (AKA "khullu") we use in our sweaters is ultra-fine at 17.5µm.
Wools that are generally considered "soft" have a fineness <20µm. Although, at the end of the day, you know best, so try new materials at different levels of fineness and decide what you like wearing most. If you find a wool sweater you love but find slightly itchy, note that fine wools, like khullu, get softer with washing.
Wicking is an important benefit of wool, because in order to regulate body temperature, humans can sweat several liters a day. All this sweat can get pretty smelly right? In fact, sweat only becomes odor if it isn't wicked away. Wool has a number of unique moisture management properties that allow it to resist body odor making it ideal for #repeat wear and simplifying your life.
1) Saturation regain: wool can absorb and retain up to 35% of its own weight in moisture and still feel dry to the touch, which reduces sweat buildup and discourages bacterial growth.
2) Isolation of bacteria: after sweat is absorbed from the skin's surface it travels outwards where it evaporates. In the process, wool actively binds and isolates bacteria within it's fiber. The isolation of bacteria reduces odor to the point where unwashed wool has 66% less odor intensity than plastic-based fibers and 28% less than cotton fabrics (Woolmark).
Fun fact: bacteria thrive in humid environments, where sweat is trapped instead of being wicked away. For example, while a 1x1cm area on a human forearm contains around 100 bacteria, an identical square in the armpit contains on average 10 million bacteria (Popular Science).
We make our sweaters from yak down, which is the hair they shed naturally in the spring, all the herders do to collect it is simply brush the animals.
Our sweaters are made in Brooklyn, New York by Tailored Industry. We work with them to create our sweaters through a new manufacturing process called WHOLEGARMENT® 3D-knitting.
We chose Tailored Industry vs. other WHOLEGARMENT® manufacturers in part because of their brand vision. They want to become a platform for on-demand knitwear. We're hoping we can grow together, create all kinds of custom sizes, and eventually remove the need for inventory completely.
Pilling is the natural process that occurs when the shorter natural wool fibers work their way to the surface of a sweater.
Pilling is normal and expected with any wool piece of clothing, but fear not because there is a tried and true method to manage pilling.
The first thing you should do is wash your sweater after the first 4 wears. Throw your sweater in the wash with a pair of jeans, just make sure to close the zippers.
Over time, shorter fibers causing pilling will pull away on their own.
Many of our sweaters, including Summer Sweaters and All-Season Sweaters, are machine washable. However, we recommend checking the care instructions for each style to be certain. For 100% yak wool sweaters, we suggest hand washing and laying them flat to dry.
The 7 Day Challenge is a way to test owning less and better. See how it feels to #repeat and get more from a go-to sweater. Wear an OC sweater every day for 7 days straight.
